All structures have walls, but how do you make those walls interesting?

          In this otherwise mundane entryway, the addition of the array of lights directing guests the front desk provides an inovative and dramatic experience.

          We all live and work among walls. However those walls do not have to be boring barriers. You can bring interest to walls with techniques such as washing with sheets of light or try unique embedded lights such as the above applications.

          today's competitive construction market, there are almost as many lighting solutions as projects. But how to tailor your choice to the individual project's specifications and circumstances will help ensure success. Key factors important in selecting the right lighting systems include budget, time resIn traints, risk, and level of quality.

The design portion of a Design/Build project which has become more popular in the last 10 years is crucial and affects the entire project. Really for the life of the building envelope. Properly designing the lighting system for the entire team can affect the overall success of the project. Knowing the capabilities of the trades that you will be working with helps with the decision of which systems can be used. Whether you're a consulting engineer or a lighting designer, you should become familiar with the process and find out what it takes to achieve results.

Here's what you need for a successful Design/Build project:

* A well defined and explicit scope of work

* A specific range of responsibility for each team member and criteria for measurement; * A knowledgeable owner who can make quick, sound decisions

* Experienced, competent team members

* A cohesive team with members fully committed to the common needs and goals set by the owner.

The bottom line for success is bringing the right lighting solution together to negotiate a plan that meets the budget as well as addressing goals and needs of all members and to ultimately satisfy the owner. Of course, the right team with the right goals and a cooperative/knowledgeable owner spells success for almost any method.

First Impressions. The exterior of your building is the first impression.

         For most buildings, the first impression is the one made from the outside, not the interior. What do you want to convey?

          What you see when you arrive at a hotel is often the place you're least likely to spend time. However, arguably, the first impression in the evening has the most impact.

          Think back to the a time you approached a new building in the evening and you were impressed with the exterior, then piqued your imagination as to what was waiting in the interior. Alternatively, think of the last time you arrived at a building that was poorly lit. Were you excited about entering the building? When designing an exterior lighting project one has to take into consideration what the owner wants the building to convey to the users of the building. Does the building need to have a inviting appeal. Perhaps you are designing a building for a security sensitive client. In that case you have to design lighting systems that will not impede with security cameras and avoid glare for any security detail. The same goes for a residential lighting design. Some clients are more concerned with entertaining while other will be more concerned with security. More likely you will have to design a flexible system that can accommodate both. Keep in mind that with many clients these questions will need to be addressed as they do not initially think of these factors.
